Don’t sign up for Equifax’s free credit monitoring! Here’s what to do instead

After Equifax revealed that a “cybersecurity incident” has potentially exposed the personal information of 143 million Americans, the credit reporting agency set up a website to let consumers know if they may have been affected. But many Americans, myself included, say the website has left them with more questions than answers. Read more: Equifax says data… Continue reading

All Florida residents ‘should be prepared to evacuate’: governor

Florida Governor Rick Scott warned Friday that all of the state’s 20 million inhabitants should be prepared to evacuate as Hurricane Irma bears down for a direct hit on the southern US state. “The storm is powerful and deadly,” Scott said. “Do not ignore evacuation orders. “Remember, we can rebuild your home, we can’t rebuild your… Continue reading

Zeis Consulting Receives FAA Section 333 Exemption

Zeis Consulting 333 Exemption

I am happy to announce the approval of our FAA Section 333 exemption (Exemption # 13346 – Regulatory Docket # FAA-2015-3387) to commercially operate Small Unmanned Aircraft (sUAV) for purposes of data collection.   We will be operating quadcopters adapted with cameras to provide wide angle, close, still and video imagery primarily for purposes of, but not limited to, inspection of residential and commercial structures.

It is our intention to provide supportive services in effort to reduce the number of industry related injuries and deaths.   According to OSHA, there were 828 fall related fatalities reported in 2013 in addition to the thousands of non-fatal injuries due to what the industry refers to as the “Fatal Four.” These include falls, caught between, electrocution, and struck by incidents.

Due to the volume of work we do with catastrophic loss, we are often faced with entering into and upon structures that may no longer be structurally sound and lend themselves to increased potential for injury. The use of sUAV’s (commonly referred to as Drones), can allow us to collect data from a safer location.

We look forward to supporting not only our own efforts but those of other contractors, adjusters, agents, engineers, real estate professionals and municipalities. We will also be providing public awareness and education sessions to aid in the overall safe handling of sUAV’s whether flown commercially or recreationally.  Many sUAV/Drone incidents are preventable and do not have to result in personal injury if properly handled and maintained.  For more information regarding  flight safety see the Know Before You Fly brochure which highlights important details you need to know.

Additionally, we are committed to continuing education for our own operators and support personnel and have adopted the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International’s (AUVSI) code of conduct in addition to working within the regulatory confines of the Federal Aviation Administration.

If we prevent even one injury we will have accomplished our mission.

Small Business Grant Deadline May 1, 2015!!

Do you own a small business that suffered damage, had business interruption or otherwise suffered significant capital loss during storms Sandy, Irene or Lee? You need to know that a deadline has been set for May 1, 2015 to submit documentation to either open or continue with an application for grant funding through the New York Rising Small Business Recovery Program. This applies to those who have initiated paperwork and just haven’t completed the process or if you haven’t applied at all.

Many have taken the initial $10,.000 or even a base award of $50,000 and do not realize there may be 10’s of thousands of dollars left on the table for their business.  This is not limited to construction activity, if your business suffered losses listed below you may be eligible for additional funding.  These losses include:

  • Working Capital
  • Inventory
  • Moveable Machinery and/or Equipment
  • Furniture

Whether you have a stand alone business or a small residential based business it is worth it to pursue initial or additional funds to aid in the recovery process. This is a much more streamlined process than other portions of the recovery grants.

You have time after May 1 to get the full application in but you MUST get in a couple simple forms by the May 1, 2015 deadline to be able to pursue this grant. If you’d like some help to find out if your business is eligible and get some help navigating this process, just fill out the simple form and we’ll get you started.

There is no fee for consultation or to get the initial deadline paperwork in so there’s nothing to lose!

FEMA Safe Rooms Design Guidance

Hot off the press!  FEMA has just released the latest version of their safe room design guidance for areas vulnerable to high winds.  This guide differs in that it is geared toward the Design Professional rather than homeowners and construction personnel.

We’re happy to see that FEMA has expanded on a publication that has already proven useful in the field to provide safe shelter in times of severe winds including tornadoes and hurricanes.

Review Processes Smoothing Out in NY Rising Program

The review process for the 6100’s and even Feasibility reviews are going much smoother these days with more and more awards being re-calculated. Due in no small part to ongoing training, program policy changes steadying out and a more streamlined focus of review teams.

Keep in mind however that we need to have clarifications closed, ERR’s completed and any other program related issues cleared up to get checks in the banks and hammers swinging. There are mechanisms in place to increase scope whether it’s through additional F6100 or Change Orders (note program caps regarding contractor change orders) throughout the rebuilding process (for those in repair and/or elevation).

Additional thanks to professionals who have aligned to provide the best services possible as we continue to rebuild our communities throughout NY.
